Symbolism

Shield.  The shield bears key elements of Earl Warren’s life, the 14th Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, as well as the ship’s mission to the U.S. Navy.  First, the ends of the top of the shield furl like parchment paper, alluding to Earl Warren’s dedication to the U.S. Constitution.  Gold further denotes honor and achievement.  The wavy barrulets refer to the ocean and the three services the USNS EARL WARREN will provide to the fleet: fuel, solid cargo, and aviation support.  The sword, a symbol of power and authority, is interlaced with the mission of the ship and crew that leads it.  The end of the blade takes the form of a fountain pen, signifying Earl Warren’s long service in public office.  The pair of scales indicate his achievements as a Chief Justice, while the enflamed pans allude to wisdom and knowledge.  The pair of scales and flames further symbolize the ship’s provision of fuel and cargo.  The invected chief denotes clouds or the sky, referring to the unit’s aviation support.  The 16 stars suggest Earl Warren’s 16 years of service in the U.S. Supreme Court, and the combination of the red stars on a white field pay tribute to his accomplishments as a Governor of California, his home state.

Crest.  The wreath adopts the first-named metal and color from the shield and blazon--white and blue.  The American bald eagle is a national symbol of the United States of America.  It bears on its chest a blue lozenge with a checkered pattern, symbolizing the many capabilities of the USNS EARL WARREN as a T-AO ship.  In the eagle’s talons is a bi-parted scroll, indicating the years of service Earl Warren dedicated to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Motto.  The ship’s Latin motto, “AUT VIAM INVENIAM AUT FACIAM,” translates to “I Will Find a Way or I Will Make One.”

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a white oblong disc within a Navy blue designation band, edged with a gold roped border and bearing the name “USNS EARL WARREN” at the top and “T-AO 207” at the base.
